Using social networks in the classroom

Web 2.0 is revolutionizing the way students can be educated. I plan on being a technology education teacher so obviously i am enthusiastic and passionate about utilizing these new tools effectively. 3 tools that I plan on using in my future classes are Blogger, Wikispaces, and Google Docs.
Blogger can be used in so many ways to enhance the class. It can be used as a medium for projects and assignments. When students use blogs for projects it gives them so many options. The entire project is creative and completely up to them to design a website. It also give them a doorway into the world of blogs. They could find they enjoy blogging and discover many hobbies and interests that they never could have if it wasn't for the blog.
Wikispaces is another resource i plan on using in the classroom. I feel that wikispaces have everything you need to base a class off of. Students can easily access assignments, important dates, resources, etc. This can also be a great communication method to parents as they can also access everything the students can. Here is a great site i found with people discussing how they use wikis in education.
Another tool i plan on using in my classroom one day is google docs. Google documents is an extremely powerful tool that allows people to create, edit, and share files. This can used in so many ways to improve a class. First off, it is the ultimate tool for students to turn in assignments. Students can send teachers the link to their assignment instead of dealing with paper copies, or emailed attachments. Students can also collaborate together from anywhere by allowing multiple users to edit the document. This can also be used by the teacher to add comments and suggestions whenever they want. The power of Google docs doesn't stop there. Here are some more ways it can be used.

I love the idea of integrating google Docs in the classroom. I replied to your Twitter comment on the subject: wondering if/ how often docs are lost in cyberspace. I guess probably not that much or so many teachers wouldn't use it.

Your link to the many ways to use Google Docs was insightful - not because of the examples (which were also good) but because it really drives home the point that we have to teach to the kids on their own "turf" and not ours.

I also love google docs. I actually just discovered it less than a week ago, but now that I know about it I am disappointed I haven't used it for other classes/tasks. Blogging is a great tool as well, I agree with you. My question for you is, how long have you wanted to be a technology education teacher for? And when you answer this question also answer how you decided you wanted to become a technology education teacher. I only ask because I find it interesting and I may want to look into it myself. I don't really know what specific field of teaching I want to go in so I am open to any suggestions/ideas.

I hope that we can start using google docs in the classroom more often!

See ya in class!

I have already started utilizing Google Docs in my other classes as a means to collaborate on group assignments. It has proved very valuable over the past few weeks, and also wish I had learned about it earlier. Definitely something to use in teaching!

Ariel,

Its actually a funny story how i decided to focus of tech. ed. In senior year of highschool i signed up for web design with Mr. Kennedy. Aparantly there wasnt enough people who wanted to take the class and it was supposed to get canceled but it accidentally never went through and i ended up in a class with just me and him. At first i thought it would be a nighmare with the full attention on me but it was actually an amazing class. He showed me how powerful todays technology was and guided and shaped my already heavy interest into technology. I want to pass this message along to my students someday.

I agree with what you (and everyone else) says about Google Docs. I never really knew it's use until we learned more about it in class. It would be a great tool to use in classrooms especially when dealing with group projects where students are too young to drive and meet up.

Google Docs is such a great tool to use. Before this class, i was unaware of how useful this web tool is. As a teacher, can you host discussions, have students turn in assignments, and post grades all in one place.

I agree that Blogger is a very useful tool and can be used in the classroom to a great advantage when incorporating technology in the classroom. Blogger is a great tool for many different reasons. First, the website can be employed for a cost of zero dollars, with the user only needing an internet connection and a computer to start blogging. Second, anyone, despite different levels of education can use a blog to connect to different people all over the world. From the blogs that I have read thus far, it appears that the topics in blogs are endless. This gives people the ability to comment on any topic and or subject depending of the users interests. Blogger is a great tool to use and incorporate technology in the classroom.
